Sunspirit Wellness Services, LLC offers exercise and wellness guidance during cancer treatment for clients and their caregivers, and survivorship health coaching after treatment. Fatigue and physical functioning are quality of life issues during cancer treatment that can be improved with exercise, according to the National Cancer Institute (2010).
During treatment, the program is tailored to the client’s specific needs and physician-guided treatment plan, to improve cancer-related fatigue and physical functioning. The priority is safety, and appropriateness of exercise is individualized based on the person’s condition and type of treatment.
Alene Nitzky, Ph.D, RN, who holds certifications in oncology nursing, health coaching and cancer exercise training, with 27 years of experience in the health and fitness industry, is the founder, owner and operator of Sunspirit Wellness Services.
During treatment she also works with the primary caregiver to improve their well-being and reduce stress. She provides mobile services so the client does not need to travel, and videoconferencing services for remote clients.
There are 12 million cancer survivors in the U.S. The 2010 take home message from the American College of Sports Medicine, the credentialing body through which Nitzky is certified, regarding physical activity and cancer is “Avoid inactivity”. A growing body of evidence points to exercise as helpful for most people undergoing cancer treatment.
After treatment, the focus is on quality of life, not disease, restoring an active lifestyle and making adjustments toward healthy behaviors to prevent cancer recurrence or additional health problems.
Nitzky states, “I’m filling a gap in care in the transition period after cancer treatment. The process of re-establishing healthy behaviors and new lifestyle patterns are adjustments that usually can’t be addressed in detail in the doctor’s office. Many people feel lost when they transition from their oncologist’s care back to their primary care physician.
They might have a follow-up plan that tells them to exercise and eat healthy foods, but taking a survivorship plan from paper to real-life practice is something that many cancer survivors need help with. Often they don’t know how long it will take until they feel better and need help setting realistic goals. There is fear and anxiety about recurrence, but also, “What do I do now and how do I get started?” Building independence and confidence in managing healthy behaviors is what I do for them. “
For those without a cancer diagnosis, or after cancer treatment, health coaching services are offered for midlife and beyond, primarily for those aged 40 and older, emphasizing exercise, functional movement, and safety to promote behaviors that improve quality of life and decrease health care costs. Sunspirit Wellness Services also works with endurance athletes challenged by chronic health conditions, such as thyroid disease, and provides group sessions and hourly consultations.
